Menstruation at an early age due to a lack of vitamin D
Girls who experience their first menstruation at an early age, may be deficient in vitamin D precipitating the time.
This is the conclusion of a study by the University of Michigan in 242 girls aged between five and 12 years in Colombia, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Scientists followed them girls for 30 months and saw affected by deficiencies in vitamin D were twice as likely to experience early menstruation.
On average, girls with lack of the vitamin had their first period at 11.8 years, ten months before the group had normal levels of this nutrient. According to the researchers, this difference may seem ridiculous, but it is very important in a time when many changes as occur in childhood.
"Early menstruation is a risk factor for biological and psychological problems in adolescents. In addition, girls who have their first menstruation at an early age are at greater risk of cardiometabolic disease and breast cancer as adults, "he said in a statement Eduardo Villamor, one of the researchers.
However, even the causes of the relationship between vitamin D and menstruation unknown.
