Man arrested for raping five-year-old boy

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man, Ganiu Amusa, for allegedly raping a five-year-old boy, Thompson (pseudonym), in the Alakuko area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Amusa was arrested on Sunday in his rented apartment on Hanson Street by the Alakuko Police Division. Our correspondent gathered that Thompson, who lived with his family on Oremeji Street, had complained about pains in his anus while his mother, identified as Adenike Ejigbo, bathed him.
The boy was said to have confessed that Amusa lured him to a place where he (Amusa) allegedly penetrated his anus. The mother was said to have raised the alarm after which the matter was reported at the Alakuko Police Division.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, on Monday for further investigation.
A police source told our correspondent that the suspect had confessed to the crime.
He said, “The boy had been complaining about pains in his anus to his mother. He had been having pains since the day the suspect penetrated his anus. That was how the mother reported the matter at the police station.
“The suspect did not deny the incident. He is blaming the devil. But the matter has been transferred to the SDCI, Yaba.”
Efforts to speak with the victim’s parents were not successful as they were said to be unavailable.
The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Aliyu Giwa, confirmed the arrest.
He added that the case was undergoing further investigation at the SDCI.
“The police are investigating further at the SDCI,” he said.

Petrol may sell for less than N87 per litre, says NNPC

Following the new template that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is working out with the the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), premium motor spirit (PMS), popularly called petrol, may sell for less thant N87 per litre next year.
Addressing journalists on the new framework in Abuja yesterday, the corporation’s Group General Manager, Corporate Planning and Strategy, Bello Rabiu, said that as at Thursday, the cost of bringing one litre of petrol to the country was N65. The logistics for bringing it to the depot and to the filling stations, he said, is about N10.55. The distribution cost is N15.49 while the open market as at today is N91.52/litre.
Continuing, Rabiu said: “Now, if you take away N87, which is regulated price, it means that subsidy is basically N4.85. If we are consuming 41 million litres, it means we are subsidizing N200 million a day.”He dropped the hint that the cost is now reducing naturally because the present importation cost of N65 was N71 about three years ago and with the review, a new template would indicate that there is no need for subsidy in Nigeria.
In his analysis of how the Federal Government would reduce the cost of fuel importation, he said: “If we can look at this one that is N91.52 and we pray we can get about N15 off there, that will bring it down to a little more or less than N80. If we take off N10.50, we come down to N81. If we take it down to N7.52, we come down to N85.
“So you can see that the price we have today, if we look at the template can come down, and many Nigerians will believe that there is no subsidy.”
He added: “Looking at this cost of N91.52 per litre, you can see it is what has been in place since 2000 to 2002, which looks to have been over-inflated.”
He said that government is now planning to optimize the cost of fuel for the benefit of the citizenry.
The Group General Manager said: “So, looking at the template itself, another thing we are doing is how we can optimise that one.
“As nature will have it, the market itself is reducing the cost because three years ago, this N65 cost of bringing to Lagos was actually about N71. Now it has come down to N65 and it will go down again.
“So, if we actually optimise that template and reduce the template, that will reduce the total cost of import and there will be no subsidy in the country.”
The Nation however learnt from one of those developing the new frame work for the management of the PMS subsidy that there are strong indications that the pump price may go for about N82 per litre.
According to him, “the government has already seen the possibility of reducing the cost by an average of N10.”
But Rabiu disclosed that the new Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) would release its new price template before the end of first quarter next year.
According to him, there is zero budget for fuel subsidy in the 2016 budget plan because the new adjustment that will lower the cost of product importation will make subsidy unnecessary.
He noted that there is no hope that the price of crude will rise in the next few years as Iran which had been on suspension will soon resume production.
He said that since the country has not been consuming up to the acclaimed consumption level it means that the Federal Government has been paying much more than what it should pay for subsidy.
“We are trying to ensure that we pay for only what the country consumes,” Rabiu submitted.
The Managing Director, Petroleum Pipelines & Products Marketing Company (PPPMC) Limited, Mrs Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, dropped the hint that the “new price will be to the benefit of every Nigerian and there is no cause for alarm.”
Saying that Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company will begin production today, she noted that the Atlas Cove and Mosimi pipelines are now functional while the PPMC is making efforts at operationalizing the line from Ibadan up to Ilorin.
At the moment, she said, the Federal Government produces seven million litres of PMS from local refineries.
The company’s boss said “the good news is that for the first time in the past 100 days, we have crude being pushed from Warri to Kaduna.
“We also have Atlas Cove Mosimi line working. Kaduna is ready to start up. I am sure by tomorrow (Saturday), we will start production from our refinery in Kaduna.”
She attributed the feat to the engagement of a private security guard company to carry out surveillance on the pipeline, adding that the partnership with the Department of State Security (DSS) has yielded positive results.
Her words: “It now reduces the burden of trucking all the way from coastal town to the hinterland. We also have efforts being made not only to Mosimi but to Ibadan and Ilorin, and that will also reduce a lot of tension.
“Why have we done that? We have brought in private security companies to guard our pipeline. Then, we had joint task-forces but we still had our lines being compromised.
“The security outfit that manages the pipelines has recorded success and quite a number of the vandals have been handed over to the security agencies.
“We also have collaboration with the DSS and this has also yielded great results.”
She said that between now and the end of the month, there are 12 vessels of products coming in with at least 30,000 metric tonnes each, stressing that there will be a ‘queueless’ Yuletide in the country.

Nigeria will succeed, says Mbaka at meeting with Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday played host to Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministries, Enugu with the controversial priest saying Nigeria will definitely succeed..
Mbaka told State House correspondents after the meeting that Nigeria was on the way to overcoming the various challenges facing it.
“We have come to commit the nation into the hands of God and pray for peace and God should establish His blessings in our country,” he said of his visit to the seat of power.
“We wish to pray for the revamping of the economy.. We are committing Aso Rock into the hands of God. We are also here to commit Nigeria to Jesus, that this 2015 ‎Christmas, Nigerians will say God is great.
“Pray for blessing for our people. I want to assure Nigerians that in the midst of what is happening, we shall succeed. The time of promotion is coming.”On the agitation for Biafra, he said that he did not discuss it with the President, saying: “I am silent on everything about Biafra.”
On the claim that he is controversial, he said: “People can say what they want. I am a happy man.”
He wished the President a happy 73rd birthday.
Buhari, at the meeting with the priest who predicted his rise to power in the last election, said that one of the best exhortations to the nation he ever heard from the pulpit was the one made early this year by Rev.Father Mbaka.
“Thank you very much for what you have done and said. It brought you out to the whole country as a man of courage. It was honest and well delivered,” he said.
“It has gone into the records as one of the best concerns expressed from the pulpit, not because it favoured me and my party, the All Progressives Congress, but because it was good for the country.”
He reaffirmed his conviction that change would come to the country “with a lot of hard work, despite the security and economic problems.”
The President appealed for the continued understanding and patience of Nigerians.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was present at the President’s audience with Father Mbaka, described the priest as a man “who stood for truth and propriety, and declared corruption unacceptable.”
He added that the Buhari administration “is committed to truth and justice, and won’t encourage corruption in any way.”

Three million Nigerians living illegally in UK, says Senate

NO fewer than three million Nigerians are living illegally in the United Kingdom (UK), the Senate said yesterday through its Committee on Foreign Affairs.
It also said investigation showed there was no plan by the British government to deport 29, 000 Nigerians, contrary to a recent report.
Committee Chairman Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu made the clarification after a meeting with officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service at the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
She said an Assistant Deputy Comptroller–General, Investigations, Intelligence and Enforcement of the NIS,   Mr. T. A   Hundeyin, also confirmed that the 48 Nigerians recently deported from the UK committed various types of crimes and had served prison terms.
Her words: “The deputy comptroller just confirmed to us that it is not true that 29, 000 Nigerians are being deported from the United Kingdom or that the UK government intends to deport 29, 000 Nigerians.“He (however) said that only 48 Nigerians  were deported and he had shown us their names and records that actually confirmed that they had all served their prison sentences so that is why they are being deported.”
She said further:  ”About three million Nigerians are illegally living in the United Kingdom and that if three million Nigerians are living there illegally and they are only removing just 48 people confirmed to have committed crime and jailed, then the situation is not too bad.”
“We will not relent in our efforts on checking and doing our oversight functions. If it requires for us to go there and visit them, and to ask questions, we won’t mind to go there and to give Nigerians and to give them the history and the records of what we find out.”

47.8 per cent get five credits in WASSCE

About 47.8 per cent of the 237,154 candidates who sat for the November/December 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates made credits and above in five subjects.
The Head of Nigerian National Office (HNO), West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Olutise Isaac Adenipekun, announced the results yesterday in Lagos.
He, however, declined to give the exact number of candidates who made credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics – the benchmark used for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
It would be the first time in more than a decade that the statistics about the results were not made public.
Adenipekun said the yardstick, popularly used to gauge performance in the examination, was not accurate for measuring pass/failure rate because the November/December WASSCE diet is a makeup examination – unlike the May/June WASSCE, which is a school-based examination mostly written by Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 pupils for the first time.
His predecessors shared this sentiment, but still always released the statistics.
However, Adenipekun said the statistics would be released on request to researchers.
He said: “The November/December diet is more or less a makeup examination for many of the candidates.  So, if it is seen as mainly a makeup examination, then to now use the yardstick of five credits, including English and Mathematics, may be misleading in comparing.  Because, for instance, a candidate that might have made seven credits in the May/June exam may only need a credit in Mathematics or a credit in English Language only for him or her to have had a complete result that would allow him to continue in his/her educational pursuit.
“However, the statistics is available.  And we know that for researchers and other interested parties who may need it for scientific researches; we are ready to make that statistics available for them.”
Of the 237,154 candidates that registered for the examination, 99.82 per cent had their results released.  However, 1,612 candidates have their results withheld because of errors Adenipekun said were being corrected by the council.
He said 28,768 candidates were being investigated for their involvement in examination malpractices.
Responding to a question about the council’s readiness to face the planned probe by the Federal Government announced earlier this week, the WAEC boss, who stepped into the office of HNO just last week, said the council’s accounts audits were up to date.
He said: “WAEC is an international organisation that relies mostly on best practices in management.  WAEC Nigeria and WAEC in other member-countries owe it a duty that their financial records must be updated every year such that as I am speaking with you, the audited account of council is up to date – that is December 2014.
“And that audited account has gone through the required processes.  And the council at the highest level has also approved that.  And that audited account for 2014 and all other previous years are available for scrutiny.
“And of course, our internal processes and procedures as far as financial management is concerned are also unbeatable.  The internal audit department of WAEC is arranged and organised in such a way that they are serving (as) a good watchdog to ensure that financial mismanagement is never allowed.  And when and where it is detected, it is promptly reported, and prompt action is also taken to correct it.
“In that light, therefore, the council in Nigeria is ever ready to open its books for scrutiny – not only for financial mismanagement, but it might also be for commendation – for government to commend WAEC for having done a good job in managing its finances.”

Dwindling oil price: Explore alternative sources of revenue, FG tells states

By Joseph Erunke
ABUJA —AS the price of oil in  the international market continues to dwindle, the Federal Government insisted that state governments must begin to explore alternative sources of generating revenues in their respective states to augment what they were getting from the centre as monthly allocations.
crude-oil-pipe-702x336-436x336Addressing newsmen, yesterday, after the National Economic Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja, where Vice President Yemi Osinbajo represented President Muhammadu Buhari; Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, said the advice became imperative in the face of the country’s present daunting economic challenges.
Udoma said the government, at the meeting, resolved that state governments should not only begin to do away with wastes but also exhibit prudence in the management of their resources,
Udoma said: “At the council today, the Ministry of Budget and National Planning made a presentation  on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF and the Fiscal Strategic Paper, FSP. The reports highlighted the government’s fiscal policy strategy and direction for the next three years.
“We also briefed council about government revenue and expenditure projections for the next three years. We briefed council about our view in terms of the global outlook and micro-economic frame work and the key assumptions underlining our projections .
“The presentation urged the states to adopt the MTEF and FSP which has now been approved by the National Assembly, which is the only body that can approve it.
“But we urged them to adopt it as a basis for the developing of their annual budgets. We also emphasised the need for states to be guided by the assumptions of the MTEF and also the need for states to be conservative in their expenditure and their expenditure projections for 2016-2018, in view of the declining oil price.
“We also urged states to look towards enhancing their Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) and blocking financial leakages in the system and generally we emphasised the need in planning for the economy for the federal and state governments to work very closely with government because we are dealing with one economy.”
ECA hits $2.257bn
Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State  said the council was also briefed by the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris, on the reports of the Excess Crude Proceeds.
He said:  “The Accountant General of the Federation reported to council that the Excess Crude Account (ECA) stood at $2.257 billion as at the end of November, 2015.
“He also reported a slight change against the previous balance with an interest which is due, of $599, 137, 467 into the account as accrued interest.
“We were also briefed on the report of the Federal Government agencies that are collecting revenue in foreign currencies and were remitting the monies in Naira equivalent into the federation account , which is not allowed.
“So the Ministry of Finance is working on the details to pass it to the council with a comprehensive report on the agencies that are involved, which will be later be made known to the public.”
Abacha loot in  treasury stands  at $26,389, 000
Also speaking, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, said the council  was given updates on recoveries from monies stolen by late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, popularly known as Abacha loots.
He said:  “We were also briefed on updates on Abacha loots in council. The Accountant General of the Federation reported that the dollar account as at November 2015 ending has a balance of $26,389,000 while the pounds sterling has a balance of £19, 000, 033. That is where we are today.”
Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State said the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, briefed the council on monetary policy of the Federal Government.
He said: “The CBN governor gave an update on monetary policy measures on foreign exchange strategy and he told the council the challenges being faced by many countries as a result of the global economy recession.
“He also reported that the drop in the oil prices has caused serious pressure on Nigeria’s reserve which currently stands at $29 billion.
“He also briefed the council on monetary policy among others as follows:
“The deduction of cash reserve ratio from 25 per cent to 20 per cent. The measure on forex market and Bank Verification Number (BVN) considering the introduction of debit card for travellers instead of cash exchange demands to reduce cash for illicit businesses, and also looking at option to diversify the economy away from oil.”

N1.04 trn fine: MTN failed to pay, threatens court action

MTN Nigeria has finally concluded it would not pay the N1.04 trn fine, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC imposed on it, for its failure to disengage about 5.1 million improperly registered subscribers on its network in August and September 2015 and has decided to challenge the NCC in court. Not even the reduction of the fine to N780 billion last week by the commission, could sway the telecommunications company.
Addressing its shareholders, yesterday, MTN said that “all factors having a bearing on the matter have been thoroughly and carefully considered including a review of the circumstances leading to the fine and the subsequent letters received from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
“MTN Nigeria acting on legal advice has resolved that the manner of the imposition of the fine and the quantum thereof is not in accordance with the NCC’s powers under the Nigerian Communications Act. Accordingly MTN has followed due process and has instructed its lawyers to proceed with an action in the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking the appropriate reliefs.
Appropriate reliefs
MTN is advised that in the current circumstances in line with the lis pendens rule (pending legal action) the parties are enjoined to restrain from taking further action until the matter is finally determined. This is consistent with previous judicial decisions in Nigeria”.
The telecommunications company said that notwithstanding this action, the company will continue to engage with the Nigerian authorities to try and ensure an amicable resolution in the best interests of the company, its stakeholders and the Nigerian authorities. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, last week reduced the N1.04 trillion fine it imposed on MTN Nigeria to N780 billion. However, the commission also mandated the telecom operator to pay the fine on or before December 31, 2015.
Meanwhile, the MTN’s latest decision has attracted several reactions from stakeholders in the industry. While some agreed that MTN reserved the right to seek court interpretation to the issue, others warned of the consequences taking the matter to court might bring to both the company, the sector and the country at large particularly with the level of impact the sector has on foreign direct investment and the country’s GDP.
Chairman of the Association of  Licensed Telecommunications Operators in Nigeria, ALTON, Engr Gbenga Adebayo, said that although MTN has the right to seek court action as a company, over matters that were not clear to it, the implication of taking the matter to court is that investors who would have ordinarily strolled into the country to do business would have to wait to see the outcome of the case before doing so. “I hope this matter would be resolved amicably for the interest of all and the sector. No foreign investor would want to come to the sector now if the matter is in court until they see the direction of the resolution. That is an implication that may also tell on the contribution of the sector to the GDP” he added.
Also president of Teledom Group, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, added that taking the matter to court may be a business decision following the nature of Nigeria’s judicial system. “Anything is possible. It may be a business decision, considering that before the case would go through all the levels to Supreme Court, it may have taken five years, of which they may have recouped a lot of gains to pay the fine. But if the court finds out there was an infraction and that the fine by NCC was in the right direction, MTN should know that it would not only pay the fine but also compensations. All these would also impact the sector in one way or the other. So amicable resolution would have served better option”.
In his reaction, President of Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria, ATCON, Engr Lanre Ajayi, said that going to court to seek clarification, was a right no one should fault MTN on, if all other options have been exhausted. He, however, said that he did not believe that it would impact the sector negatively in any way. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, last week reduced the N1.04 trillion fine it imposed on MTN Nigeria to N780 billion.
However, the commission also mandated the telecom operator to pay the fine on or before December 31, 2015. The fine imposed on the telecom operator followed what NCC described as MTN’s inability to disconnect about 5.1 million Nigerian subscribers improperly registered on its network, after several warnings in August and September 2015.

5killed, 7 injured as IPOB, MASSOB clash with JTF in Onitsha

Court orders Kanu’s release from detention Jubilation as Nnamdi Kanu regains freedom
Kanu’s release, a triumph over injustice —MASSOB
Implement Confab report now—Ohanaeze
By Chidi Nkwopara, Ikechukwu Nnochiri, Chimaobi Nwaiwu, Francis Igata & Ugochukwu Alaribe
FIVE persons were, yesterday, shot dead at the Niger Bridge Head, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries when members of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, clashed with Joint Task Force, JTF, comprising the  Army and the Police, which mounted road block at the Niger Head Bridge.
Four of the victims shot dead were members of both IPOB and MASSOB, while one person is said to be a soldier, who was grabbed by the  mob, angry with the way soldiers opened fire on the jubilating crowd that included non pro-Biafra agitators, and fell four of them before they ran for their lives, leaving the victims behind.
All the markets around the Niger Bridge Head, including the Bridge Head Market, Onitsha Patent and Propitiatory Medicine Dealers Market (Ogbo Ogwu Market) and other markets located around the bridge, including Abada Market were quickly shut down, following sporadic shooting by the military to scare the jubilant crowd away.
Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday,  ordered the Department of State Service, DSS, to immediately release  the detained  leader of IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
The court directed that Kanu, who had been in detention since October 17,  should be released “unconditionally.”
Ruling on the fundamental rights suit by Kanu, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, said there was no basis for the applicant to remain in custody since there was currently no charge pending against him.
The court order came barely 24 hours after an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting at Wuse Zone 2, struck out a one-count  charge the Federal Government preferred against the IPOB leader.
Meanwhile, according to an eye-witness at the Onitsha Head Bridge, who was coming from Asaba end of the bridge, the Biafra agitators were said to be marching on the road near the River Niger Bridge, chanting solidarity songs in jubilation for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and were accosted by the soldiers, who ordered them to go back, and disagreements ensued before the soldiers allegedly opened fire on them.
Another version of the story had it that, the pro-Biafra agitators and those sympathetic to their cause, were jubilating, singing and dancing near the bridge and in annoyance, the soldiers, who had been guiding the bridge since the last shooting, during which unarmed nine protesters were killed and 18 others  injured,  opened fire on them, gunning down four.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ali Okechukwu confirmed the clash and accused the pro-Biafra agitators of mobilizing over I00 of their members to launch attack on the soldiers at the Niger Bridge Head and even tried to dispossess them of their guns.
The PPRO, who was silent on the number of people killed,  said: “I learnt that there was a disagreement between the Army, IPOB and MASSOB members, who mobilized over I00 of their members to attack soldiers at the Niger Bridge Head.”
He said that he was trying to get the Army authorities to ascertain the true position of the incident, but unfortunately they were not picking their calls. He was also not forth-coming on the number of casualties at press time, and requested that he be given enough time to make calls to ascertain the true position of things.
Speaking on the incident, leader of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu said the news of the release of Mr. Kanu elicited singing, dancing and jubilation in Onitsha and other ‘Biafran’ lands and those in Onitsha took their dance to Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu plaque at the Niger Bridge Head and out of envy, and  because of the singing and dancing, and banters they were throwing with one another, the soldiers, who mounted a road-block there, opened fire on the dancing protesters and killed four.
He said that no amount of intimidation, harassment and killing of their members will make them resort to violence, adding that “the military is doing all sorts of things to push us into violence, but we will never do that because that is what has been setting us free in all the harassment and intimidation we have been going through.”
Vanguard gathered that immediately the four people were killed, the Police, Army, Navy and Civil Defencee, that had been harassing and intimidating the residents and subjecting them to all sorts of dehumanizing treatment  at their check-points, including raising up their hands before crossing their check-points, abandoned the roads.
The  busy Onitsha Owerri Road, Asaba Onitsha Enugu expressway, were a shadow of themselves as people deserted the roads for fear of being shot by the military and the Police, who were said to be regrouping to confront the IPOB and MASSOB members.
Seven people, who sustained bullet wounds, were transferred to Multi Care Hospital, Onitsha and the bodies of the dead  were said to have been taken to a yet to be identified hospital in Onitsha.
Kanu entitled to right to liberty
Meanwhile, the Federal High Court ruling by Justice Adeniyi, came barely 24 hours after an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Wuse Zone 2, struck out a one-count  charge the Federal Government preferred against the IPOB leader.
Justice Adeniyi, yesterday, held that Kanu was entitled to his right to liberty as enshrined in section 35(1) (4) and (5) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
He maintained that the continued detention of Kanu after two months without trial, was in violation of section 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution.
Justice Ademola said there was no law permitting the DSS or any other security agency to detain any Nigerian beyond two months without any concrete move to try such person before a competent court.
The judge said available facts before him showed that the DSS was not ready to release Kanu on bail.
He, therefore, ordered the DSS to immediately grant  unconditional bail to the applicant.
Okorocha commends soldiers for handling IPOB, MASSOB protests
Meanwhile, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, has commended the Nigerian Army for peacefully and tactically handling the recent protest staged in Owerri by thousands of loyalists of IPOB, and  MASSOB.
The governor, who spoke while on a visit to the 34 Field Artillery Brigade, Obinze, yesterday, also expressed happiness that no life was lost during the protest in Owerri.
“This administration is very pleased with the way the officers and men of the Nigerian Army handled thousands of MASSOB members, who staged a protest in Owerri recently, as well as ensured that there was  no bloodshed,” Okorocha said.
He regretted the poor state of facilities at the Obinze barrack and assured that he was going to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the situation in the barrack.
In Enugu, wild jubilation erupted in major streets of Enugu metropolis, yesterday, as the news of the release of detained Director, Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu filtered in.
When Vanguard moved round Ogui Road, New Haven streets in Enugu, people especially youths, were in a frenzy mood, just as most relaxation spots were filled to the brim occasioned by his release.
Triumph over forces of injustice
Leader of  MASSOB, Uchenna Madu, who had been the arrow-head of the struggle for Kanu’s release said: “The discharge, dropping of the charge against Kanu by the Nigerian government is a triumph over forces of injustice, suppression, oppression and subugation against the oppressed IPOB.
“MASSOB’s consistency and uncompromised spirit under me has been vindicated. MASSOB shall continue with IPOB for genuine, committed Biafran non- violent struggle. We salute our comrades in IPOB both at home and in the Diaspora for their unrelenting, courageous efforts, spirit of oneness in pursuing the vision and mission of IPOB.
“Nnamdi Kanu has become the hero of genuine Biafra agitation. Those, who earlier opposed Kanu will cover their faces in shame. MASSOB hails the committed, eloquent, dedicated Igbo leaders, who fearlessly assisted in the release of our brother, Kanu. MASSOB knows them, because we met and appealed to them and they responded. Kanu shall be received in Biafraland as the greatest hero.”
Ohanaeze Ndigbo tasks fg on 2014 confab resolutions
Also, drawng from Nnamdi Kanu’s release, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, urged the Federal Government to quickly implement the resolutions of 2014 National conference report as a credible panacea that will address the grave injustices, neglect, marginalization meted to the people of South-East zone.
General Secretary, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Joe Nworgu told Vanguard on phone that, the “Federal Government took the right action by releasing Nnamdi Kanu. His arrest heightened tension. Now that he had been freed, tension will reduce. Looking out of my office, in Ogui Road, Enugu, thousands of people are jubilating.”
Jubilation in Aba
Members of IPOB, in Aba, Abia State went into wild celebrations over the release of their detained leader, Nnnamdi Kanu.
The IPOB members, who had gone round the city, Wednesday, over the judgment of Abuja Magistrate’s Court to that acquitted Kanu as early as 7a.m., converged at National High School, on Port Harcourt Raod, from where they took off to Cemetery Market, Faulks Road and ended their march at Osusu Primary School.
Vanguard gathered that the group had, yesterday, warned that markets and business centres in the city would be shut in support for their detained leader, but the news of Kanu’s release, changed the situation as traders later opened for business.
Some of the IPOB members, who spoke to Vanguard, said that the release of Kanu has been long awaited, adding that  the agitation for a sovereign state of Biafra would never die.
